Black Opal is one of the biggest beauty brands known for serving the cosmetic needs of people of color. Founded in 1994, the company sought to address how mainstream brands were overlooking Black women at the time. Black Opal (rebranded as BLK/OPL in 2017) offers products in a wide range of tones and undertones to suit every skin color and features multiple foundation lines for different wear, needs, and skin concerns. That said, Black Opal was not actually a Black-owned business until last year, when two Black women acquired the company. Today, Desiree Rogers serves as CEO and Cheryl Mayberry McKissack is president.
“We were definitely fans of Black Opal, and, just like many women of color, were impressed by the range of products that have been available to us for the past 25 years,” Rogers told Allure at the time. “We understand the nuances of highly pigmented skin, as well as its special needs. Skin care has always been a part of the brand’s DNA, and we will continue to look for ways to delight our consumers in caring for their skin,” she said. “We want to continue to create innovative, high-quality products that are truly accessible to all women of color.”
